Ebook About A forensic psychologist fights a mental war against two serial killers in this disturbing thriller from Mike Omer, Washington Post and Amazon Charts bestselling author of A Killer’s Mind.An online video of a girl clawing at the ceiling of her own grave could be the worst thing FBI forensic psychologist Zoe Bentley has ever seen. Perhaps even more disturbing is the implication of the video’s title: “Experiment Number One.”Zoe and her partner, Special Agent Tatum Gray, work as fast as they can to find the monster behind the shocking video, but soon another one shows up online, and another girl turns up dead. Meanwhile, a different murderer is on Zoe’s mind. Rod Glover has been tormenting her since childhood, and his latest attack is a threatening photo of himself with Zoe’s sister. As Glover’s threats creep toward action, Zoe’s torn between family and duty.Zoe must think fast to prevent another murder. With her own family’s safety on the line, Zoe feels she’s never been in more danger. And while she’s always known her job could send her to an early grave, she always assumed she’d be dead first.Book In the Darkness (Zoe Bentley Mystery Book 2) Review :
Mike Omer’s second book contains a great plot, one that will cause you to turn pages until you are finished. It also includes a few items that, at times, threatened to bring that page-turning to a screeching halt.Forensic psychologist Zoe Bentley returns as she and her FBI partner Tatum Gray head for San Angelo, Texas to investigate a case involving a potential serial killer. The author immediately immerses us into the story with gruesome details of how the killer works, while at the same time complicating matters with a secondary story regarding a previous case. Mr. Omer deftly handles both, continuing to drive toward a breakneck finish. The author’s details about the killer and his methods are realistic, and I found myself guessing right along with Zoe as we both deciphered clues in our attempt to solve the case by revealing the identity of the suspect. I thought the plot and the details about the murder suspect were five-star elements of this book.I am not sure if the author meant to be funny, but there were passages that simply did not work for me. For instance, when a hiccupping potential witness was interviewed or a scene where Bentley and Gray were eating pizza. Useless details are okay if gently inserted. In these instances, the author insisted on beating us over the head with them, as if to ensure we got the jokes.Characterizations were mixed, although most improved as the book moved on. Early interplay between Bentley and Gray seemed improvised and forced, as well as the early relationship between the FBI officers and the police detectives. The character of Lt. Peter Jensen was over the top and unbelievable. It seems inconceivable that a city would allow a person that incompetent to reach an important rank in the police hierarchy.Even with the above bumps, this is a better than average book containing a definite thriller aspect. At times, it is downright scary. Even with references to book one, “In the Darkness” can be read as a standalone. For those seeking a captivating book that will begin quickly and never slow down, you won’t be disappointed with the plot of this book. Three-and-a-half stars, rounded to four. I could not wait for the second book in this series. It did not disappoint. Love the plot twists. Cannot wait for the third!
